Founded in 1946 as a sardine can label
machine manufacturer, Luthi Machinery Company, Inc. is today the world leader in the
manufacturing and leasing of tuna can filling machines. Luthi's entry into the world
market in 1984 started the company's current growth. In 1996, the majority of the total
number of cases of tuna filled worldwide were filled using Luthi machines. In 2000, Luthi
Machinery & Engineering Company, Inc. was acquired by Atlas Pacific Engineering Company, Inc. The Luthi
name was changed to Luthi Machinery Company, Inc. and operates the leasing company as a
business unit of Atlas Pacific with manufacturing and administration in Pueblo, Colorado.
To conform to an industry accustomed to
leasing machinery instead of buying, Luthi set up and started their current leasing
program for the tuna canneries in 1962. Starting with a single machine for canning
chunk-style tuna, the product line has grown over the years to the present offering of two
(2) basic machines, SP (solid pack) and the Luthi Rotary Filler (chunk pack) with multiple
configurations of each. With modifications the filling machines have been successfully
adapted to filling cans of poultry, meat, vegetables and pet food.
Although the can filling machines comprise the vast
majority of the current business, Luthi also manufacturers cutting machines for poultry,
meat, bacon, pet food and tuna.
